Practitioner Spotlight: Kaitlin De Brabandere, Osteopathic Manual Practitioner

Meet Kaitlin

Kaitlin De Brabandere is an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner at Mahaya Health in Toronto, offering Classical Osteopathy sessions at our Little Italy clinic. Her approach is gentle, hands-on, and grounded in understanding the body as an interconnected whole.

What Is Classical Osteopathy?

Classical Osteopathy is a gentle, hands-on approach grounded in the belief that the body is an interconnected, self-regulating system with an inherent capacity to adapt, regulate, and recover. It recognizes that structure and function are closely related, and that changes or restrictions in one area can influence the function of the whole.

Through skilled touch, assessment, and manual techniques, an osteopathic manual practitioner considers how the body’s structures and tissues are moving and relating to one another. Treatment works to reduce restrictions and support movement, circulation, and communication throughout the body.

What Can Classical Osteopathy Support?

This approach can support a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Acute and chronic pain

  • Movement restrictions, postural and structural imbalances

  • Changes in breathing, digestion, circulation, and other bodily functions

  • Physical tension and changes in comfort, energy, and overall wellbeing

  • Recovery following injury or surgery

  • Support during physical training and periods of increased physical demand

  • Support during pregnancy and postpartum

Kaitlin's Approach: Whole-Body, Gentle, and Attuned

Kaitlin takes a whole-body approach to care, considering how changes or restrictions in one area may contribute to how the body is moving and functioning elsewhere. This broader perspective helps her address patterns of compensation and adaptation that may be influencing overall function.

Her approach is gentle and attuned, using skilled touch and careful assessment to work with the body rather than forcing change. She considers factors such as asymmetry, tension, compression, pressure, and load, and how these may influence movement and function.

“There’s a lot of information in how a body responds. My role is to pay attention to that, rather than trying to impose a particular outcome.”

Kaitlin understands that recovery and adaptation are not always linear. Her intention is to leave space for the changes that occur during and after treatment, allowing your body to continue responding beyond the treatment room.

“The treatment is only part of the process. The body needs time to respond and adapt, and each session gives us a chance to see what has changed and continue from there.”

There is something inherently interesting in working with a body that is always responding, adapting, and changing. Kaitlin’s approach leaves room for that potential rather than trying to dictate what change should look like.

Kaitlin's Path to Osteopathy

“My path to osteopathy began through my own experience of long-term recovery. I initially came to it looking for relief from pain, but what I experienced was much broader. As I recovered, I noticed changes in how my body functioned as a whole… not just in how I felt, but in my energy, movement, and overall health. It changed my understanding of what the body is capable of when given the right conditions to adapt and recover.”

This experience sparked a deeper interest in osteopathy and in understanding the body as an integrated physiological system. The more Kaitlin learned, the more she became interested in the body's capacity to adapt, heal, and recover. That curiosity continues to shape her practice and her appreciation for the complexity of the human body and its place within nature.

For Kaitlin, this ongoing capacity for change is what makes osteopathic care so exciting. Her approach embraces that potential, working with the body’s capacity to adapt, reorganize, and discover new possibilities for movement and function.

What to Expect in a Session with Kaitlin

Your First Appointment

Your first appointment begins with a conversation about what brings you in, your health history, and your goals for treatment. Kaitlin then uses dynamic assessment to observe how your body moves, looking at patterns, asymmetries, and areas of restriction. Treatment is guided by what she observes and is tailored to how you present that day, with your body’s feedback continuing to inform the treatment throughout the session.

Because the body is interconnected, treatment may include areas beyond your primary concern when they are relevant to movement and function. You remain fully clothed throughout the treatment and move only within your range of comfort.

Follow-Up Appointments

Follow-up appointments begin with reassessment, considering what has changed since your previous session and how your body has responded. Treatment is then adapted to what is present at that time, allowing each session to build from the last.

Depending on your presentation, care may be short-term or more gradual. The pace of care is adjusted over time based on the changes from session to session.

At Home After Treatment

Movement after treatment can support the body's process of integration. Gentle activities such as walking, biking, or swimming encourage circulation and provide an opportunity for the body to explore and incorporate changes through normal, rhythmic activity.

There is no need to push yourself or perform specific exercises. An easy walk, a relaxed bike ride, or a swim can provide enough movement to support circulation while giving the body time to respond and adapt. Paying attention to how movement feels, rather than trying to correct or control it, can also help you become more aware of how your body is changing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Classical Osteopathy covered by insurance?

Many extended health insurance plans in Ontario cover Osteopathic Manual Therapy. We recommend checking with your provider to confirm your coverage. Receipts are provided for all sessions.

What should I wear to a session?

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move easily. Soft, flexible fabrics work well. Please avoid restrictive clothing such as jeans or stiff fabrics, as you may be asked to move through gentle positions during assessment and treatment.

Can Classical Osteopathy help with stress or anxiety?

Classical Osteopathy may be supportive during periods of stress, particularly when stress is accompanied by physical tension, changes in breathing, or difficulty settling.

Through gentle, hands-on treatment, the aim is to support greater ease in the body and create conditions that allow it to shift out of patterns of sustained tension and adapt more freely.

Osteopathy is not a replacement for psychological or medical care when it is needed. It can, however, be used alongside other forms of care as part of a broader approach to supporting physical and overall wellbeing.
